Every time that people appeared at meetings, they would call the police…

According to the Board of Supervisors, they had to make the community aware of what was happening in the community.  Well how could they make the community aware if the community did not understand the EPA report and all that stuff?  We tried to make them translate it.  First they fought us.  Every time that people appeared at meetings, they would call the police.  Of course that intimidates people.  You’re going to be scared.  Most of the people in Buttonwillow are not radical or — they’re just working families who want to raise a family.  They’re not wanting to be troublemakers or having trouble with the police.  So anyway, but I kept telling them “They’re just intimidating.  They’re going to try to intimidate us.  Nothing is going to happen to you.”  Nothing really happened.  They would just stand there and try to intimidate people.  They said they would never translate the meetings and we got them to translate them.  They said they would never translate the EPA report and they translated a big portion of it.  It took them a long time so if we had not been at that meeting and we had not gone and started asking questions, they would have probably gotten their permit within the year.  It took them over seven years to get the initial permit and then they were held up court and they went all the way to San Francisco again.
